The Means of His grace helping us to find our participation in His work of Redemption
Resurrectional Life
1 Peter 2
Points from the Sermon
- Incluso los elementos más problemáticos de la vida no pueden separarse del sufrimiento y la resurrección de Cristo Jesús. Even life’s most troubling elements cannot be separated from the suffering and resurrection of Christ Jesus.
- Cristo Jesús es nuestro modelo para sufrir con gracia y vivir para la justicia. Christ Jesus is our model to suffer gracefully and be alive to righteousness.
- Pero más que un modelo, el Señor Resucitado ofrece una comunión que empodera y protege. But more than a model, the Risen Lord provides communion that empowers and protects.
- Entonces, vivamos como siervos de Dios: honrando a todos, amando a la Iglesia, temiéndole a Él y honrando a las autoridades. Then, let’s live as servants of God: honoring everyone, loving the Church, fearing Him, and honoring authorities.

“But more than a model, the Risen Lord provides communion that empowers and protects.” I don’t know if this is the most “important” point, but I think it is the pivotal point that enables us to “live as servants of God”. Jesus invites us to abide in him, which is more than having a recognition or acceptance that suffering exists. It is also more than even following Jesus’ example of how to suffer well. It is this abiding relationship which makes his suffering, as well as ours, meaningful. This abiding relationship “empowers and protects”, but it also enables us to look outward rather than inward. It gives us the ability to act emphatically with others in their suffering. This abiding is indeed the thing which makes it possible for us to be who God intended for us to be—which are his image-bearers, those who are “like him” in their ability to relate to our fellow mankind.
He suffered without sinning, deceitful language, reviling, or threats. In his suffering, he continued to trust that God the Father’s justice would be satisfied in his obedience to him. In so doing, our sins were born by him, and not ourselves. Instead of dying in our sin, his work enabled us to die to our sins, and provided the means for us to live in righteousness. The beauty of God is on display through Jesus on the cross.
How is the Gospel affirmed in your heart by your desire and ability to fulfill verse 17?
This is the Gospel: There is none that is righteous. Not one. The wages of this sinful nature is death. God’s holiness demands it, and justice must be satisfied. But, God so loves the world, that he gave his begotten son. Whoever believes in him (I.e. trusts that he paid for their sins and bestowed his righteousness upon them) will not perish, but have eternal life.
No one is righteous. Not one. Not even me. Only Christ in me is righteous. I am not deserving of God’s grace, but he freely gives it to me. This love is supreme. It’s ultimate. It’s complete. It’s undeserved. Therefore, my desire is to serve God. I need his help to fulfill this command to love my neighbor (who is no worse than me) as I love myself, that the love of God may be evident to others.

What is the relationship between suffering to extend his grace and living to promote his righteousness?
I must abide with Christ, and Christ with me, in order have the ability to do both.
