Money: First step to joy – hand over the keys

We just considered how to turn from self-destructive ways of relating to money.  And now, finding joy in how we relate to money begins with figuring out who owns it.

Or, put another way, words (like rights, control, and freedom) have to do with ownership over things.  Brainstorm a list of things that we have some control of.  Don’t just limit yourself to things you can see or touch (e.g. have you ever been frustrated when someone wasted your time or hurt your reputation?).

“The man can neither make, nor retain, one moment of time; it all comes to him by pure gift; he might as well regard the sun and moon his chattels.”

C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

“I know, I know…”

Perhaps you’ve already learned that God owns it all, but rarely do we think down to the details and practical implications.  So let’s press in deeper and pursue joy like we mean it.  What do these verses say about ownership?  (even just looking at some of them is beneficial)

Psalm 50:12

1 Corinthians 4:7

1 Corinthians 8:6

Romans 11:34-36

Deuteronomy 8:17-18

Matthew 25:21

What does God own?

What are some things that we may be tempted to say “belong” to us, but actually belong to God?

Planning for joy: giving up the keys

What things do you currently consider yours but you want to consciously surrender (hand over the keys) to God?

What is one practical step to do that?
