Alex’s Commentary

Nestled in between two significant declarations – one of power (verses 3, 16) and the other of urgency (verses 5 & 10) – we find a list of qualities we must adorn our faith with. These qualities go from the internal and intimate (virtue) to the external and public (love). Peter tells us that with the power of the risen Christ and with a deep sense of urgency, we must prepare our faith for its interaction and display in society. As we furnish the faith God has given us with each of these qualities, we learn two things: one, that this faith is strong enough to uphold them; two, that this healthy sense of urgency should move us to depend on His power to see our faith flourishing with such decoration.

For Your Consideration

  • How does the thought of His power and coming affect your daily life?
  • What would each of the qualities described in this passage look like in your life?
  • How does 2 Peter 1:9 apply to you?
  • React to this phrase, “… the Gospel is freely offered to everyone, and it can reach all kinds of people.”
  • How is the Gospel the answer to questions asked by people outside the Church?
