Alex’s Commentary

James’ warning – if you do not consider how the Triune God intervenes in daily life, you will be deceived – has strong tones of relevance for us, believers in the USA: with the wealth we have accumulated, with our capacity to reinvent and redefine, and with the freedom we enjoy, it is easy to be distracted from reality. Therefore, the writer calls us to consider God’s gifts and His act of giving and how they remark His uniqueness (holiness) and power. The height of this demonstration is the fact that, due entirely to His grace, He has given us Himself in the Person of God the Holy Spirit, the Good and Perfect Gift.

For Your Consideration

  • React to the phrase “we are not created to accumulate wealth.”
  • How have you seen God’s goodness and perfection in the gifts He has given you?
  • What emotions do you experience when you realize every beat of your heart, every breath you take, you owe it to Him?
  • The Spirit of Christ gives life, direction, and purpose; how are you listening to Him to discover what they should look like in your life?
  • React to the phrase “The most significant loss is not to see His Beauty.”

Extra Credit

This week, use a prayer similar to this, “Spirit of the Living God, help me to see that you are the Good and Perfect Gift; help me to remain steadfast, standing on the Truth,” and share your experience.
