Alex’s Commentary

The call to confess and repent can be scary and profoundly troubling; in them, we bear our hearts in the open and disclose our condition, thoughts, feelings, and emotions. The Gospel requires this from us, but at the same time, it reminds us of what makes it the Good News: the grace and mercy of the Triune God. Look at everything David asks of the LORD (grace, healing, deliverance, salvation, sanctification, communion) and consider that this and more is yours now, in Christ Jesus, through the power of God the Holy Spirit, because of His grace.

For Your Consideration

  • In what “gasping for air” situation have you seen the mercies of the LORD for you?
  • What does David’s declaration in verse 8a look like in your life?
  • How do you know the Triune God hears your pleas and accepts your prayers?
  • Can we really point others toward God’s holiness while struggling with our sin? Explain your response.
  • How is the Spirit using His Means of Grace in cultivating your heart toward holiness?
