Alex’s Commentary

The text at hand is not calling us to try harder, go all in, or even give it our best shot. Instead, Luke brings us into a persistent state of dependency upon Him by reminding us of our Lord’s words. “Stay dressed for action” then calls us to see our participation in this life as a way to know Who our treasure is; as always, Scripture uses daily life as the context for the exploration/exposure of our hearts. Now, as wise managers of His grace, we are not exempt from pain and suffering – particularly when our service to others does not bear the fruit we were expecting – but we can cope with it because of the sweet and intimate communion our Master provides for us.

For Your Consideration

  • What are you constantly ready for? What does it say about your treasure and heart?
  • How does your treasure help you to deal with the reverses of life?
  • How do you know you are using the right metric to measure your treasure?
  • What makes you a wise manager of His grace?
  • How do you enjoy the communion your Master offers you?

Extra Credit

  • How does His imminent arrival affect your daily activities? How do you keep your lamp burning in expectation of Him?
