After reading Isaiah 53, it is easy to see why so many people are offended by the cross, and the physical punishment endured by our Lord. All the abuse, injustice, and lack of mercy for Jesus Christ begs the question, Why? The Cross clearly displays the depth of our sin. Our crimes against the God that is holy, holy, holy are not something simple, or issues that could be easily dismissed. But the cross also displays the vastness of God’s grace, because without waiting for our approval, without the need for our acceptance, He certainly carried our infirmities. It was not our cheering that motivated our Lord to carry out his plan. It was not our warm reception of the salvation He was providing for us that kept Him going. He endured the cross for his own glory. And for that, we need to be thankful.
